DEMARCATION #2

Due to my family situation, Sydney International Airport has always been a frequent visiting site for me. My walk from the departure section to the parking lot is always the time when I think about many ‘Whys' related to the geopolitical determinism that affects our free will to choose our life place to live. A vibrant imagination about a utopian world without borders is always active inside my mind. It has always been a frustrating feeling to believe that we, as human beings, are not completely free, unlike birds, which is able to fly all over the world with no limitations. This feeling has framed the following question: why are some people free to choose the place they want to live in, while others are not?

Demarcation is a piece of artwork designed to raise awareness and generate conversations around such a polemical issue. It’s been also been created to expose and demystify assumptions, to encourage action, and to educate the public on issues relating to immigration and borders. The theoretical framework of this research has been determined by border restrictions and its domino effect on human displacement, geopolitical determinism, and the concept of the border in the words of the refugees.

The concept of Demarcation starts by questioning the force of borders and its effect on human's free will. Researching about theories related to migration flow and geopolitical determinism, inspired me to propose the feature of my design based on the line as the first element associated with borders. The physical design of Demarcation refers to Australia's border protection policy and the restrictions that exceed mere physical fences and walls. Peoples' interaction with the design has a symbolic interpretation of how boundaries limit human actions and how we transform borders by breaking them apart from all limitations. Our action refers to our desire to be free as a human, and our desire will change the solid-like structure into a dynamic one. Audiences will experiences the feeling of the limitations of the artificial boundaries on the freedom of humans to displace in their interaction with Demarcation.
